Salman Rushdie, Out and About

In the wake of Ayatollah Khomeini's infamous death sentence, Salman Rushdie gained international renown as a champion of free speech and a challenger of fundamentalist hegemony. Among the virtues shrouded by the author's sudden iconic status, however, were a relentless sense of humor and a developing body of fiction virtually unrivaled among contemporary writers.

Yes, This Is About Islam

"This isn't about Islam." The world's leaders have been repeating this mantra for weeks, partly in the virtuous hope of deterring reprisal attacks on innocent Muslims living in the West, partly because if the United States is to maintain its coalition against terror it can't afford to suggest that Islam and terrorism are in any way related.

The trouble with this necessary disclaimer is that it isn't true.

Statement of Purpose

We are addicted to the writings on India's master of magical realism, Salman Rushdie. As we surf interviews with him, reviews and essays on his work, and so forth, we'll link to it here. There will be little commentary and less original writing--this is meant more as a bibliography for future reference than anything else.

We are going to make an effort to date posts to this blog the same as the date of publication of the article we're linking to; however, Blogger dates only go back to 1990, so anything dated 1/1/1990 is really older than that.

For the record, this inaugural post gets the 1/1/1990 date so that it shows up as the earliest post.
